Section 508 Resources
Section 508 Information Technology Standards are developed by the The United States Access Board as a part of the implementation of the Section 508 requirements of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, the act was ammended in 1998 to include information technologies. The Information Technology Accessibility Standards provide purchasing and development requirements for all federal agencies. These specific requirements may or may not legally apply to higher educational institutions, but they do provide guidance in higher education implementing their legal obligatoin under the Section 504 requirements of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 for higher education institutions to provide progammatic access to educational and administrative resources of the campus. The act states that people with disabilities be provided information in formats that are accessible to them and ideally at the same time as all other students. As campus include information technologies in their educational materials and administrative systems these resources must be accessible to them. The Section 508 Information Technology Accessible Standards for federal agencies can provide guidance to higher education institutions in developing requirements for purchasing accessible information technologies.
